Find a deleted TikTokWhere copies survive, and where they don't

When a TikTok is deleted, by the creator or by TikTok, the original post is gone. TikTok will not play it again, and no app or website can bring that exact post back. What often survives are copies: the creator may have posted it elsewhere, other people may have reuploaded it, and you may still have a screenshot or a recording.

So the realistic goal is to find a copy, not the original. Here is where to look, in the order most likely to pay off, and the honest limit: if nobody ever saved or reposted the video somewhere public, there is nothing left to find.

[ 01 ]

Start with your own TikTok account

Your account can at least tell you who posted the video and what it was called, which is what you need to search for copies.

  • —Watch history. If your app has it (in Settings and privacy, under Activity center), it lists videos you watched recently. A deleted video generally won't play there either, but the entry can still show the creator's username or a thumbnail.
  • —Favorites and likes. Check the bookmark tab and the liked videos tab on your profile. Deleted videos usually disappear or show as unavailable, but sometimes the username is still visible.
  • —Reposts and shared messages. If you reposted it or someone sent it to you in a DM, the message often keeps the creator's name and caption even when the video no longer plays.
  • —Your phone. If you ever tapped Save video, look in your camera roll. Downloaded TikToks carry the creator's username as a watermark.

If it was your own video, check whether your app has a Recently deleted section. Where TikTok offers it, your own deleted posts can be restored for a limited time. This does not work for other people's videos.

Check the creator's other accounts

Creators often keep the same video in more than one place. Once you know the username:

  • —Look for a backup or second TikTok account, often the same name with a number or "backup" added. Creators mention these in their bio or in other videos.
  • —Check their Instagram, YouTube and X, usually linked from the bio. Many post the same clip as a Reel or a Short.
  • —If the account is still active and the video was simply removed, ask them. Some creators will resend or repost a video if asked politely.
[ 03 ]

Search for reuploads by other people

Popular TikToks get downloaded and reposted constantly, on TikTok itself and on other platforms. Search with the text you remember:

  1. 1.Caption and on-screen text. Search any distinctive phrase in quotes on Google, YouTube, X and inside TikTok search. Add "tiktok" to the query on Google.
  2. 2.Hashtags. Search the hashtags you remember inside TikTok and Instagram. Reuploads often keep the original hashtags.
  3. 3.The sound. If you know the sound or song name, open its page on TikTok. It lists videos that use it, which can include a repost of the one you want or a new upload by the creator.
  4. 4.Compilations. Search YouTube for "tiktok compilation" plus a topic or the creator's name. Viral clips often end up in compilation videos.

Reposts on Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and X often keep the TikTok watermark with the original username, which helps you confirm you found the right video.

Try the Wayback Machine, but expect little

If you have the video's link, paste it into the Wayback Machine. Be realistic: TikTok pages are rarely archived in a way that plays the video. You may find a snapshot with the caption, username and date, which is still useful for searching, but you usually won't get the video itself.

[ 05 ]

Reverse search a screenshot or recording you still have

If you have any image of the video, a screenshot, a screen recording, or a copy someone sent you in a chat, you can search for other copies visually. This finds reuploads even when the caption and username were changed.

  • —Google Lens. Upload the screenshot, or a clear frame from your recording, and check the results that show the same scene. Try several frames. See how to reverse search a video on Google.
  • —Retrace. Upload the screen recording to Retrace and it samples up to 24 distinctive frames and lists the pages where the same footage appears, across platforms. A screenshot also works and is searched as a single frame. The free scan tells you how many matches exist and where; no account needed.

Pasting the deleted TikTok's link into Retrace or any other tool won't work, because the video can no longer be downloaded from that link. You need a file: a screenshot, a recording or a saved copy.

When nothing can find it

Every method above depends on a copy existing somewhere public and indexed. If the video was only ever on one TikTok account, nobody reposted it, and you have no screenshot or recording, there is nothing left for any search to find. Tools that promise to show you any deleted TikTok cannot do it; TikTok does not offer deleted videos to anyone.

Private accounts and videos set to Friends only are also invisible to search, even before they are deleted. If you do find a copy, and want to know whether it is the original upload or a repost, follow our guide to finding who posted a video first.

Find where else the footage appears.

Upload the clip or paste its link. The scan and the match count are free; the sources cost $0.90 if you want them.

[ FAQ ] Questions

Can I watch a TikTok after it was deleted?

Not the original post. TikTok stops playing it everywhere, including your history and favorites. You can only watch a copy someone saved or reposted.

Do deleted TikToks stay in my watch history?

Sometimes the entry remains, but the video generally won't play. The entry can still help you find the creator's username.

Can I paste a deleted TikTok link into a search tool?

It won't work, because the video can no longer be downloaded from that link. Use a screenshot, screen recording or saved copy instead.

Does the Wayback Machine have deleted TikToks?

Rarely with a playable video. Sometimes it keeps a snapshot of the page with the caption and username, which helps you search for copies.

Can Retrace find a deleted TikTok?

It can't see the deleted post. If you upload a screenshot or recording, it can find other public copies of the same footage, if any were posted and indexed.
